Geraldine Ondrizek, artist and professor of art in Portland, Oregon, works in the crossroad between visual art, architecture and medical research.
Her ongoing exhibit, Tracing Genetic Inheritance, is a synthesis of three of her most-recent collections (Chromosome Painting Edition II 1-X, Shades of White and mtDNA) and addresses issues of inheritance, memory and genetics. The exhibit is on display at the Evergreen Gallery until Dec. 7.
Architectural components and varied media, including hand-carved wooden supports, dyed silk panels and suspended wooden boxes, are prevalent in Ondrizek’s art. “We’re looking forward to learning about how she chooses her materials at the upcoming artist lecture,” said gallery assistant Cambria Weinshilboum.
On Oct. 19 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Ondrizek will speak about her multidisciplinary approach to visual art as part of the Evergreen Art Lecture Series at Evergreen State College.
Currently at Reed College, Ondrizek has over 25 years of experience in the visual arts. Twenty of those years have been focused on conducting extensive collaborative work with medical researchers. Her large-scale architectural installations often reflect this focus on genetics and cellular development.
In the past, Ondrizek’s art was showcased in Germany, Canada, Israel, France and England. Her most-recent exhibits can be seen at galleries in Olympia and Seattle this winter.
