SINK Premiere

by Nora Kovacs for OLY ARTS

For almost two years, members of South Puget Sound Community College’s film and production program have been hard at work on an intense feature film entitled SINK. Filmed and sourced entirely in Olympia, SINK will be presented to the public for the first time on January 28.

Written by film student Bryce Hille and directed and edited by Riley Gibson, the film follows an ex-gangster who’s forced to return to his old ways after learning his younger brother fell into trouble in the local drug scene. The former drug dealer must test the limits of family and love as he reenters a world he sought to escape.

“This has been a labor of love for the past two years,” producer and assistant director Brandon Cartwright tells OLY ARTS. SINK was a first for many, Cartwright explains. “For all of the crew, it was their first time working on a feature, and an ambitious one at that. We had 20 days and four pick-up days to knock out a very complicated and fun script.” SPSCC students were faced with the challenge of writing, filming and producing a feature film from start to finish, with all the details and complexities those processes entail. Not only was timing limited, but SINK was a “micro-budget” film, says Cartwright. He says it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Olympia’s generous community, namely “help from local businesses and the partnership with SPSCC.”

Starring Sara Fiksdal, Ira Katz, Jesse Moore-Hendrickson and Dylan Twiner, SINK is certain to showcase up-and-coming talent. “The cast was wonderful to work with,” Cartwright continues, “all sourced from the lower South Sound film and theater communities.”
