Call for Artists: Art in Olympia Storefronts

By Mariella Luz

Olympia Artspace Alliance is seeking proposals from artists and artist teams to develop site-responsive, temporary, two-dimensional art installations related to the theme “Drawing on Olympia.” The artwork will be installed in vacant storefront windows in downtown Olympia from August 9 to September 20.

Project Summary:

“Art in Olympia Storefronts” is a new project of the Olympia Artspace Alliance (OAA) to create a series of temporary art installations in vacant storefront windows in downtown Olympia. Proposals will be selected through a jury process to ensure suitability for each location.

The project is spearheaded by the Olympia Downtown Alliance and supported by a grant from the Olympia Arts Commission Grants to Arts Organizations and The Washington State Arts Commission.

Project goals:

●  Bringing attention to downtown spaces through art.
●  Creating a unique exhibition opportunity for artists.
●  Increasing the visibility of Olympia Artspace Alliance and local artists.
●  Connecting artists with downtown spaces and property owners.

Installation Information:

OAA particularly seeks work that is innovative and that will capture the attention of people walking through the streets of downtown Olympia.

●  All two-dimensional visual media accepted.
●  Final installation may consist of existing or new works created for temporary installation.
●  Content must be suitable for the general public.
● Preference will be given to designs that cover the entire window area, or mask with black fabric/paper those areas of the window not filled with images.
●  All materials and labor required for installations are the responsibility of the artist. This includes hanging hardware, curtains or temporary walls, tools, ladders and any other materials that are required to install the artwork.
●  Artists are responsible for maintaining their work for the duration of the installation and may be asked to provide repair of their work if necessary and requested by OAA.
●  One application per artist or artist team.

Five sites are anticipated to be available:

●  Windows at Capital Savings & Loan Building (former Thekla), 425 Franklin St. SW.
