Peace on the Move: A Benefit Run for New Traditions Fair Trade

By Melinda Minton

New Traditions Fair Trade — the classic, loving, healthy venue for good eats and music — is set to host a benefit run in downtown Olympia. Locals are encouraged to run, walk or stroll. “In fact, bring your beautiful babies in a stroller, an international baby wrap or anything that makes that young one happy while you dance, skip, walk or gently run,” said Jody Mackey, Traditions’ co-owner.

Some changes have recently come to the café. Two years ago the fair-trade retail store was sold by former owner Dick Meyer to Macky and Stacy Mugue, who remodeled the space and added various fair-trade crafts, clothing and jewelry.

“When I contemplated the next part of my slow-down plan by stopping the running of the cafe, Jody and Stacy expressed their interest,” said Meyer. Mackey had worked in the café and store for over 20 years since Traditions first moved into its new space, and now she, along with Mugue, are the owners of both the café and the store.

The run-walk-stroll event will collect donations to benefit the café. The mission of Traditions is to act as a community center for wholesome food, concerts, workshops and public forums. It’s a self-proclaimed gathering place for a community of interesting and involved people.
