CINE•FILES: The Secret of NIMH

By Ellis Boran

The Secret of NIHM is an animated adventure movie based on Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH (fun fact—the name was changed to Mrs. Brisby in the film due to trademark concerns with Frisbee) about a charming family of mice who try their hardest to relieve the sick little mouse, Timothy, from pneumonia.

The movie’s setting is a field next to a farm where the mice live. Mrs. Brisby, Timothy’s mother, ventures out through many breathtaking terrains which really brings out the outstanding illustration done by the artists. I think my favorite aspect of this film was how far it brings its viewers into the story. In every scene you are on the edge of your seat hoping that the lovable mother-mouse will succeed on her quest.

I couldn’t find many things in the movie that I think should’ve been changed, so you may think I’m low-key nitpicking when I make this statement: I believe the movie was a bit too focused. I didn’t see any curves in the story, the plot was less of a swerving stream of events leading to the main climax, but more of a straight ray of the same goal. I think movies are more interesting when they give you a sense of confusion and anticipation as to how each small story will mesh together with another to form one inspirational ending. Still, the film is a great and innovative film.

I saw this film as a very little kid and didn’t remember anything when I saw it again for my review, but I did feel a sense of intuition. The Secret of NIMH is an all-time classic and I think anybody reading the book or who has read it should go ahead and give it a watch, because I can almost guarantee that if you love animation and If you love adventure and drama, you’ll enjoy this film.
