SUMMARY:Shaped by Sea and Story: Exploring Washington’s Maritime Identity
DESCRIPTION:Shaped by Sea and Story: Exploring Washington’s Maritime Identity\nThursday\, September 17\, 2026\, 5:30 – 7:00 PM\nWashington State History Museum\nFREE\n\nJoin the Maritime Washington National Heritage Area for an evening exploring the many communities and cultures that have shaped\, and continue to shape\, life along Washington’s waterways. Through storytelling\, performance\, and conversation\, we’ll reflect on how living on the water has influenced who we are as Washingtonians. Together\, we’ll also explore how these histories and traditions are preserved\, shared across communities\, and knit into a shared sense of place.\n\nImage credit: Edmonds Waterfront by David Demarest.\n\nAbout the “We the People Lecture Series”\n\nThe “We the People Lecture Series” takes place on “Third Thursday” evenings when Washington State History Museum admission is free. The series invites everyone to explore what it means to be a Washingtonian and how that identity connects to the nation’s founding ideals of life\, liberty\, and the pursuit of happiness. Each session will look at this idea from different perspectives\, helping us see the many ways people understand and experience Washington’s story. The series will team up with local cultural groups\, historical and heritage organizations\, Tribal museums\, and educators to encourage community participation and highlight the importance of sharing history. Programs will include a mix of talks\, demonstrations\, trivia\, and performances that combine learning with fun\, offering something for everyone to enjoy.\n\nThe “We the People Lecture Series” is a part of Washington State’s commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. SUMMARY:Hidden Layers: Women's Undergarments and How They've Shaped Ladies' Liberties
DESCRIPTION:Women’s underwear has long reflected society’s views on modesty\, femininity\, and beauty. From historic styles that restricted the female form to the more liberating fashions of today\, women’s undergarments have been symbols of both oppression and empowerment.\n\nIn this talk\, explore how comfort\, freedom\, and function in women’s undergarments mirrored broader social changes. We ask why there were so many people throughout history who had their panties in a bunch over the drawers in women’s drawers. And we pull back the layers of satin and silk to see how the evolution of women’s underwear parallels our ongoing struggle for gender equality.\n\nThis program is supported as part of the Humanities WA Speakers Bureau.\n\nSpeaker Bio\n\nDiane Johnston is a theatrical costume designer who has spent the past 35 years creating costumes for a variety of productions throughout the region. She holds an MFA in costume design and is a member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees.

DESCRIPTION:By The People: Traditions in Dialogue— Indigenous Pacific Northwest Weaving\nSunday\, July 26\, 2026\, 2:00 PM\nWashington State History Museum\nFREE with registration\nJoin us for a conversation with six Indigenous weavers from across the Pacific Northwest\, exploring the art of weaving and its cultural significance.\n\nWeaving is a foundational art form among Indigenous communities in the Pacific Northwest\, both connecting tribes through shared traditions and expressing each tribe’s distinct practices. This program brings together artists representing multiple Tribal Nations to discuss their work\, materials\, and the meaning of each woven piece.\n\nParticipating weavers are alumni of the Heritage Arts Apprenticeship program\, where they spent a year training with master weavers. Together\, they will share insights into techniques such as cedar bark and Raven’s Tail wool weaving\, while reflecting on the intergenerational knowledge and community that sustain these traditions.\n\nParticipants:\n\n Donna McNeil (Samish)\, Master cedar weaver\n Sia Aronica (Yakama)\, Apprentice weaver\n Janine Bufi (Samish)\, Apprentice weaver\n Janice Jainga-Lonergan (Tsimshian)\, Master Raven’s Tail weaver\n Dawn Davis\, Apprentice Raven’s Tail weaver\n Ashley Schmidt\, Apprentice Raven’s Tail weaver\n\nThis program is part of By the People: Conversations Beyond 250\, a nationwide initiative of community-driven programs exploring 250 years of American cultural life and imagining a shared future. The series is presented by humanities councils across the U.S. in collaboration with the Federation of State Humanities Councils and the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage\, and complements the 2026 Smithsonian Folklife Festival.\nThis program is presented by:\n\nHumanities Washington opens minds and bridges divides by creating spaces to explore different perspectives. Founded in 1973\, Humanities Washington is our state’s flagship nonprofit for public humanities programming and the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.\n\n\n\nWACultures’ Heritage Arts Apprenticeship Program supports a master artist and an apprentice in preserving cultural traditions important to their community. WACultures also promotes cultural traditions and tradition bearers through research and publications. From people who’ve existed here since time immemorial to diverse newcomers\, WACultures recognizes the diverse spectrum that makes Washington a unique cultural landscape.
