SUMMARY:Author Talk: Walter Riley @ Orca Books
DESCRIPTION:Walter Riley has been involved in political organizing for most of his life- that starts with 1950s mobilizations against Jim Crow apartheid laws followed by 1960s student and labor organizing with the Progressive Labor Party\, early Black Panther Party formations\, anti-war activities\, and co-leading the Peace and Freedom Party’s Black Caucus. By the 1970s Walter was focused on labor and welfare organizing in Chicago and Detroit. In the 1980s he became a criminal defense and civil rights lawyer\, and challenged South Africa’s apartheid system. The organizing efforts he’s been most attentive to since the earlier 2000s has supported infrastructure for Haitian movement building as well as challenged police violence in Oakland.\n\nOrca Books will be hosting Walter Riley\, Jesse Strauss and Alma Busby-Williams in-person at Orca Books on Wednesday\, June 24th at 6pm. Walter will be discussing the political lessons and tools he’s gleaned from since his early years as a leader in the Civil Rights Movement to now. Civil Rights and Structural Attacks is a inter-generational conversation between Walter Riley and Jesse Strauss. Rebecca Solnit notes of the book: “Riley embodies the living memory of a nation and its movements undergoing profound change. This book in the form of an interview traces their evolution\, including the intense protests in the late 1960s at San Francisco State University to found the country’s first ethnic studies department\, and other landmarks in “how we got here.”

SUMMARY:GREAT BEND CHORALE - I WAS A STRANGER
DESCRIPTION:The Great Bend 2025-26 season concludes with I Was a Stranger\, a poignant program that reflects on mercy\, grief\, and the power of welcome. \nThe journey begins with Samuel Barber’s Agnus Dei\, a choral setting of his iconic Adagio for Strings\, transforming its familiar ache into a sacred plea for peace and forgiveness. \nFrom this place of solemn reflection\, Andrey Stolyarov’s Out of the Depths offers a cry for mercy drawn from Psalm 130 – music born of personal loss\, gradually unfolding from sorrow into a luminous expression of hope. \nThe program culminates with John Muehleisen’s Borders\, a sweeping\, multicultural cantata commissioned by Great Bend for the Chorale’s 2019 Carnegie Hall debut. The American-prize winning work opens with a traditional Salish welcome and weaves together global folk melodies and poetry from Emma Lazarus\, Brian Bilston\, and Alberto Ríos. Borders offers a powerful meditation on hospitality\, identity\, and belonging. \nTogether\, these works create a moving narrative that invites us to see the stranger not as “other\,” but as kin. \nPROGRAM\nBarber “Agnus Dei”\nStoylarov “Out of the Depths”\nMuehleisen “Borders”\n\nTICKETS\nGeneral Admission – $22\nSenior / Military – $18\nStudent – $5 at the door\n\nDATES\nFriday\, June 5\, 2026 | 7 PM\nFaith Lutheran Church\n1212 Connection St.\, Shelton\, WA\n\nSunday\, June 7\, 2026 | 4 PM\nOlympia First Methodist Church\n1224 Legion Way SE.\, Olympia\, WA

SUMMARY:Art Opening: Alibaba Awrang
DESCRIPTION:Alibaba Awrang is a celebrated Afghan painter and master calligrapher whose work blends classical Islamic traditions with contemporary visual language. Trained in Shiraz and Tehran and shaped by years of teaching at Kabul’s Turquoise Mountain Institute\, Awrang’s practice reflects a deep devotion to spirituality\, poetry\, and cultural memory.\n\n\n\n\nNow based in Connecticut after his 2021 evacuation from Afghanistan\, he continues to create richly layered works that honor his heritage while exploring new artistic landscapes.\n\n\n\n\nAwrang’s paintings merge calligraphy\, geometry\, and bold color to create meditative\, architectural compositions. Each piece is built through meticulous layers of ink\, gold\, and pigment\, where fragments of poetry\, historical scripts\, and symbolic forms drift between abstraction and text. His surfaces feel both ancient and contemporary\, echoing illuminated manuscripts\, sacred architecture\, and the rhythmic flow of classical calligraphy.\n\n\n\n\nThrough this fusion\, Awrang transforms language into visual light\, offering viewers a space of contemplation\, resilience\, and cultural continuity.
