SUMMARY:Uncle Bonsai CD Release Concert
DESCRIPTION:Last May\, Uncle Bonsai recorded the Olympia show\, at New Traditions Cafe\, for inclusion in a brand new release. Now\, one year later\, the group is thrilled to return to Traditions Fair Trade\, on Saturday\, May 2nd\, for the Olympia CD Release Concert!\n\nNow in its 45th year\, Uncle Bonsai presents “UNCLE BONSAI LIVE: selections from 7 Sins\, 7 Wonders\, 7 Dwarfs – a song cycle\,” the group’s 11th recording\, featuring 20 brand new songs\, some which were recorded at Traditions Fair Trade!\n\nAnd just what IS Uncle Bonsai? Imagine what might happen if Tim Burton and Edward Gorey hijacked the Andrews Sisters en route to a Stephen Sondheim festival with The Beatles and Tom Lehrer in the sidecar; you’d get Seattle super-harmonizers Uncle Bonsai. With just three voices and an acoustic guitar\, Bonsai presents an often dizzying vocal array of intricate harmony. Their songs\, dark and hilarious at times\, just as often delight with moments of great insight and beauty.\n\nThe trio aligns itself with the under-achiever\, the dejected\, the outsider\, the black sheep. Densely-packed lyrics fly by in a whir at times\, and take a skewed stance on topics such as first-world problems\, the creation of the universe\, the afterlife\, and\, of course\, holidays with the family. Uncle Bonsai’s acoustic folk-pop songs are almost one-act plays or short stories\, resisting strict pop\, folk\, or singer-songwriter categories. Their songs focus on the passing of time\, the passing of genes\, and the passing of pets – the truth of everything seemingly buried somewhere under the family tree.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Peter Stark
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome Peter Stark to the store for an author talk and book signing! We can hardly keep copies of his previous book Astoria on the shelves. This new book promises to engage readers as well. \n\n \n\nTHE LOST CITIES OF EL NORTE: CORONADO’S QUEST\, THE UNCONQUERED WEST\, AND THE BIRTH OF AMERICAN INDIAN RESISTANCE.\n\nWith the backing of the Spanish empire in 1540\, Francisco Coronado set out for El Norte Misterioso to subjugate its people\, steal its gold\, and seize the land. Instead\, Coronado encountered the true power of the American West––complex Indigenous societies\, brutal deserts\, starvation\, cold\, and countless other hardships that claimed 90% of his party’s lives. \n\nCoronado and his people traversed 2\,500 miles of unmapped terrain\, ranging across the present-day U.S. states of California\, Arizona\, New Mexico\, Texas\, Oklahoma\, and finally Kansas. They were the first Europeans to gaze upon the Grand Canyon and the Rocky Mountains; made first contact with the Puebloan peoples; crossed the Sonoran Desert and the Great Plains\, where they encountered endless herds of bison and the nomadic tribes who followed them. After leading the largest exploring cavalcade ever assembled in the New World\, wearing his gilded armor and bobbing plume\, Coronado retreated back to Mexico City two years later accompanied only by a hundred or so hangers-on and carried on a litter\, a broken man. America’s Southwest and Plains would remain unconquered for the next 300 years.\n\nAuthor of NYT bestseller Astoria\, Peter Stark puts his thrilling and diligent historical narration towards Coronado’s quest and some of the earliest examples of Indigenous resistance. He is a National Magazine Award nominee and contributor to Outside\, where he originally chronicled his Lugenda adventure. His work has also appeared in Smithsonian and The New Yorker. He is the author of Last Breath and Driving to Greenland and the editor of an anthology\, Ring of Ice. Stark lives in Missoula\, Montana.

SUMMARY:CapCity Presents: Fern Spores + Seola Station + Yarrow at Wild Child
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Olympia’s vibrant live music scene with a showcase of the Pacific Northwest’s most soulful up-and-coming rock storytellers\, presented by CapCity Presents.\n\nYarrow opens the night with a lush set drawing equally from the psychedelic rock movement of the 60s and electric blues of the 50s to create new sounds\, songs and music. Formed in 2023 in Seattle\, they are known for their cathartic live shows and soulful storytelling. Seola Station Website\n\nFern Spores deliver femme-folk-rock known for gritty guitar leads\, haunting cello melodies\, and powerhouse vocals that leave audiences spellbound.
