SUMMARY:Late-Night TV Comedy Writing: Monologue Jokes Workshop
DESCRIPTION:For the first time\, TC Media (Thurston Community Media) is bringing a professional television writers’ room to Olympia. The organization announces its Spring Comedy Writing Intensive led by veteran television writer\, director\, and producer Brian Kahn.\n\nThe first in-person class\, “Late-Night TV Comedy Writing: Monologue Jokes\,” drops students directly into a fast-paced\, working writers’ room. Participants write topical monologue jokes based on current events\, learn formal joke structure\, and experience real-time punch-up. Selected jokes are performed and recorded in TC Media’s studio.\n\n“Joke writing is a craft\, and craft can be taught\,” says Kahn. “When students understand the mechanics\, why a setup earns a laugh\, why a punchline lands or doesn’t\, something clicks. Then they see their own material performed and recorded\, and the learning accelerates fast. I’m all about education by doing. I’m also all about baked goods\, so if anyone brings scones to class\, you’re getting an A.”

SUMMARY:PINK FLOYD THE WALL w/ LIVE SHADOWCAST
DESCRIPTION:Join OFS for a special screening of the cult classic\, Pink Floyd’s The Wall with a live shadowcast! 1982’s “The Wall” is a psychological musical film about a rock star “Pink”\, who descends into madness after a life filled with trauma\, which he represents as building a metaphorical “wall” around himself. The film\, a cinematic adaptation of Pink Floyd’s 1979 album\, uses minimal dialogue\, relying instead on a mix of live-action\, animation\, and music to serve as a deep dive into themes of trauma\, consumerism\, authoritarianism\, and fascism\, and how these elements can separate individuals from one another. Leaving us all just “bricks in the wall.” See the film like you never have before with a live shadowcast performing all of the music\, live\, alongside this iconic film.

This cutting-edge program showcases the dynamic blending of violin and percussion quartet- an unforgettable experience that pushes the boundaries of chamber music.\n\nPROGRAM\nVivian Fung New Work (World Premiere) ECM co-commission\nGabriella Smith FIVE (World Premiere)\n\nINTERMISSION\n\nJoan Tower To Sing or Dance (Seattle Premiere) ECM co-commission\n\nARTISTS\nKristin Lee\, VIOLIN | Sandbox Percussion\, Ensemble in Residence: Jonny Allen\, Victor Caccese\, Ian Rosenbaum\, Terry Sweeney\, PERCUSSION\n\nThis concert is dedicated to Robert Cole and Jean MacGregor for their generous support of Emerald City Music.\n\nFOR THE CURIOUS MIND\n\nFeaturing premieres by three generations of female American composers\, this program showcases the dynamic blending of violin and percussion quartet.\n\nHear from the composers themselves:\n\n“I see this project as a violin concerto of sorts\, but in a more adventurous vein\, as a percussion orchestra forms the backdrop for this setting. There is an inherent theatricality in the sound world I am seeking to explore\, so as part of the process of composition\, I worked with the performers to maximize the use of spatial possibilities in the room\, placement of instruments\, and movement of performers.”\n— Vivian Fung on her New Work\n\n“When I spent some time with the wonderful composer Arvo Pärt\, we had a discussion about the origins of music. He felt music came from the voice (or singing) and I had a different idea that it came from the drum (or dancing). Basically\, this difference of opinion reflects a longtime split between composers who write mostly for the voice (Pärt\, Verdi\, Puccini\, Wagner\, etc.) and those that compose mostly for instruments (me\, Beethoven\, Brahms\, Tchaikovsky\, etc.). When I was asked to write a piece for violin and percussion\, that difference became immediately apparent: how to have these two very different instruments in the same space\, living fairly comfortably together.”\n— JOAN TOWER on ‘To Sing or Dance’
