Dragon Journaling Workshop: Learn to Tame and Befriend Your Inner Dragons w/Matthew D. Markell

October 22, 2022 at 8:30 am - 4:00 pm PDT

Why Tame Dragons?

The conventional wisdom in most Western mythology is that dragons are meant to be slain or conquered. When it comes to our “inner” dragons, however, these methods do not work.

Our dragons are a part of us.  As such we cannot simply dismiss them or rid ourselves of them. Our task is to learn how to heal our relationships with them and bring about inner reconciliation. Without even knowing it, we have tasked our inner dragons to carry harmful stories about ourselves that cause us to feel afraid, ashamed, or belittled.

Our natural tendency is to want to get rid of our dragons, as our experience has taught us that they only cause us trouble and pain. We must, however, learn to heal our relationships with them to teach them to let go of the old and harmful stories about ourselves that they have been carrying around for us.

When we learn how to tame and befriend our own dragons, we learn that they carry with them a secret, hidden power, energy, and vitality that we needed all along to help us reclaim our inherent wholeness. We cannot claim these gifts, our birthrights, however, unless we allow ourselves to tame, befriend, and bring inner reconciliation and peace between ourselves and our own inner dragons.

The Workshop

The Journaling Workshop is a day-long, intensive, and reflective journaling experience. It includes some learning, reflection, storytelling, and discussion in the morning sessions.

The afternoon sessions are dedicated to engaging each specific section of the journal, practicing the implementation of the tools through several journaling exercises.

About the Retreat Leader

Matthew D. Markell is a licensed, master’s level therapist from the State of Washington, living and working in the Seattle area. Matthew has over fifteen years of experience working with individuals, families, and groups in his therapeutic practice.

Combining his love of human psychology and mythology, Matthew has developed a journaling method for human growth and healing provided in this workshop, which also led to writing his first published work, “The Fire That Never Dies: Dragons of the West.”

Matthew employs an Experiential approach to his therapeutic practice, encouraging clients to employ the use of curiosity about their own lives and stories they have learned to tell about themselves, helping them to identify old stories which no longer serve their own healing and wholeness, as well as learning how to embrace and celebrate new stories designed to promote healing, wholeness and inner reconciliation in their own lives.
