Olympia Speculative Fiction Writers Group-Workshop

August 12, 2022 at 6:00 pm 8:00 pm PDT

For August, our workshop topic is ‘Deep POV.’ Since we learned about immersive writing last month, this workshop will pair well with what we’ve already learned. And hopefully, it’ll help us deepen our readers’ sense of immersion in our stories. How can we tap into deep POV no matter what point of view we’re in? Cause I think what we’ll learn as we explore deep POV is how to connect to our characters and bring out their inner voice and perspective.

Writer Lisa Hall-Wilson wrote about deep POV in her article on 17 Things to Know About Deep POV:

Deep POV is intense, it can bog down the pace, and not every scene or character is suited to using deep POV. This is a stylistic technique you keep in your writer’s toolbox. Some writers try to stick close to deep POV most of the time, some use it only for key emotional moments. There’s no rules (though, I believe romance generally trends towards using deep POV most of the time). The key is to know how each scene moves the story ahead, what work each scene needs to do in telling the larger story, and be strategic with the tools you use to create specific effects.

The Well-Storied Podcast has a great article on How to Write in Deep POV that highlights its use in all points of view:

The point of writing in Deep POV is to encourage readers to experience the story through one character’s perspective at a time, making the events of the story more personal and gripping. This technique is a popular one in modern genre fiction, as it mimics the experience viewers have when watching many of their favorite films.

Writers working in Deep POV can utilize any tense and grammatical person (e.g. first-person, third-person, etc.), making this technique fairly adaptable to a writer’s style and their story’s needs. What defines a certain type of storytelling as being written in Deep POV is its subjective nature, distinct character voice, and limited marks of authorship.

Both of these quotes illustrate the point that deep POV is another storytelling technique we can use at any point in our writing based on what we are trying to accomplish in the moment.
