SUMMARY:Hidden Layers: Women's Undergarments and How They've Shaped Ladies' Liberties
DESCRIPTION:Women’s underwear has long reflected society’s views on modesty\, femininity\, and beauty. From historic styles that restricted the female form to the more liberating fashions of today\, women’s undergarments have been symbols of both oppression and empowerment.\n\nIn this talk\, explore how comfort\, freedom\, and function in women’s undergarments mirrored broader social changes. We ask why there were so many people throughout history who had their panties in a bunch over the drawers in women’s drawers. And we pull back the layers of satin and silk to see how the evolution of women’s underwear parallels our ongoing struggle for gender equality.\n\nThis program is supported as part of the Humanities WA Speakers Bureau.\n\nSpeaker Bio\n\nDiane Johnston is a theatrical costume designer who has spent the past 35 years creating costumes for a variety of productions throughout the region. She holds an MFA in costume design and is a member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees.

SUMMARY:The Painted Screen - John Singer Sargent: Fashion & Swagger
DESCRIPTION:Experience art like never before.\n\nJoin us for The Painted Screen\, a new monthly series exploring the lives and legacies of artists who have shaped how we see the world. Each screening offers a window into the creative spirit…journeys of color\, passion\, and imagination told through the power of film.\n\nJohn Singer Sargent: Fashion & Swagger\n2024 – 1 hour 33 minutes\n\nJohn Singer Sargent is known as the greatest portrait artist of his era. What made his ‘swagger’ portraits remarkable was his power over his sitters\, what they wore and how they were presented to the audience. Through interviews with curators\, contemporary fashionistas and style influencers\, Exhibition on Screen’s film will examine how Sargent’s unique practice has influenced modern art\, culture and fashion.\n\nFilmed at the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston and the Tate Britain\, London\, the exhibition reveals Sargent’s power to express distinctive personalities\, power dynamics and gender identities during this fascinating period of cultural reinvention. Alongside 50 paintings by Sargent sit stunning items of clothing and accessories worn by his subjects\, drawing the audience into the artist’s studio. Sargent’s sitters were often wealthy\, their clothes costly\, but what happens when you turn yourself over to the hands of a great artist? The manufacture of public identity is as controversial and contested today as it was at the turn of the 20th century\, but somehow Sargent’s work transcends the social noise and captures an alluring truth with each brush stroke.\n\nStep into the glittering world of fashion\, scandal and shameless self-promotion that made John Singer Sargent the painter who defined an era. Explore the unique creative process of the late 19th century’s favorite portrait artist and the way in which his portraits captured the spirit of a vibrant and rapidly changing age.
