Because voters approved a one-tenth of one percent Olympia sales-tax increase (now in its third year) to fund the Inspire Olympia grant program, the city recently announced $3.3 million in grants for 2026-27, with $2.1 million awarded to 49 arts nonprofits. Thanks to this, Olympia has gained a theater and a gallery as well as other opportunities for the community to experience and participate in arts of all kinds.
“MOTHER” is a visual and verbal exploration at Thurston County Museum of Fine Art through September 18. The show presents personal accounts in various media by nineteen artists on birthing, motherhood, and the emotional and physical labor involved in bringing up children – a hot-button subject in these times given the abolition of Roe v. Wade, and the subsequent dangerously stringent laws governing bodies with wombs.
Thurston County Museum of Fine Arts supports experimental and experiential art. They have made themselves quite the legacy. They usually house group shows twice a year, with some solo shows in between when possible. The Spring Arts Walk show through May 24 is a local open call. The theme is Labyrinth, and it is a deeply intriguing show because of its multiple interpretations of this universal theme and the uses of varied materials and compositions.
Thurston County Museum of Fine Art is reinventing itself this year as Coast Salish Museum of Fine Art, creating a platform for native people’s art. OLY ARTS spoke to Griffin Quinn (they/them) about how this came about.
Thurston County Museum of Fine Art’s mission “is to increase the number of free and accessible art shows/art spaces in the Thurston County area. By doing so we hope to enrich the lived experiences of individuals in our community through the appreciation of art, as well as to provide new spaces and opportunities for local artists to show their work.”
