by Alec Clayton for OLY ARTS
Two Olympia-area artists have been chosen to show work in the bicoastal exhibitions Coast to Coast West in Seattle and Coast to Coast East in New York beginning in October and sponsored by The National Association of Women Artists and Women Painters of Washington. These artists are Susan Flora Glendenning Fine of Tumwater and Julie Creighton of Grapeview.
An East Coast transplant, Fine has lived in Washington since 1979. She earned her bachelor of arts degree in studio art and education at Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina. A wife, mother, grandmother, poet, writer, musical composer and calligrapher, her art ranges from abstract to figurative, floral and landscape. She won third place in abstraction in the Pastel Journal Magazine Top 100 for 2011. Locally she has shown her work at State of the Arts Gallery and the Washington State Department of Ecology in Lacey.
Creighton lives and paints on tranquil Stretch Island in Case Inlet near Grapevine. Her watercolors reflect personal expressions of her love of nature. Since 1992, her paintings have been accepted into numerous juried art shows and recognized with awards, including Best of Show. She has been selected for corporate cards, calendars and commissions. Her paintings are included in both private and corporate collections throughout the United States and abroad. Her gallery representation includes Gallery 10, Lopez Island; Kiersten Gallery, Seattle; and Childhood’s End, Olympia.
Coast to Coast West will exhibit 100 juried works at the Washington Convention Center. There will be an opening soirée Oct. 13 from 5 to 8 p.m. Coast to Coast East will exhibit 80 juried works at the Prince Street Gallery in New York.
Works for the WPA section of the show were chosen by Deborah Paine, former curator of the Microsoft Arts Collection and current curator and collections manager at the City of Seattle’s Office of Arts & Culture. The NAWA juror is Margaret M. O’Reilly, executive director and curator of fine art at the New Jersey State Museum. Works for the New York show have not yet been selected.
